The Ledge #730: Even More New Releases & Other Treats!

I ended last week’s new release episode with a good dozen or so songs I did not find time to air. How could I handle that? That’s not enough new tunes for a third show of new tunes? Should I just keep them in storage for the September series?

But then I remembered that today (8/21/26) was a momentous day for rock and roll. It’s the day that Gravest Graves by The Cramps was coming out. For those living under a rock, here’s the short story. After Lux Interior died in 2009, his partner Poison Ivy became a complete recluse. Reportedly, she didn’t even open the mail containing the royalties from the inclusion of “Goo Goo Muck” in the Netflix show Wednesday.

At some point, In the Red Records head honcho Larry Hardy was visiting Ivy, and was stunned to find boxes and boxes of studio reels in her garage. He contacted Henry Rollins, who dropped everything to head across the country to bring them back to proper storage in Nashville. There they discovered reels and reels of recordings from the 1977 sessions with Alex Chilton that resulted in their first couple of singles.

Now this material has been released, and it’s the archive find of the year. Seriously, there’s no way that upcoming Beatles box set can compete with what should have been the very first Cramps album. So tonight’s show kicks off with five tracks from this record, and I dare anyone to disagree that this is what rock and roll is supposed to be.

Besides the Cramps tracks, and the leftover new releases, I’ve got a ton of other archive and live tunes. There’s also a set devoted to the 27th edition of the International Pop Overthrow series. There’s a wonderful remix of a 46 year old power pop tune by the underrated Code Blue. And lots more!

The Ledge #726: Covers

You guys all know my rules about the cover version episodes – once the folder is full it’s time for a show. This time around, it’s also perfect timing. As I was putting this week’s show together, I discovered that Trash Kickers had put out a live video of them covering “Can’t Hardly Wait” at their May album release show.

Oh, yeah, I had to include that. Here’s why I love this band so much. Over the years, I’ve received dozens and dozens of press releases stating that this band or that album is reminiscent of The Replacements. They rarely are. In fact, many tracks on their debut record, Way Out Somehow sound like discarded Paul Westerberg tunes. Very good Paul Westerberg tunes, in fact.

And while I was at it, another Facebook post reminded me that in 2013 Paul Westerberg had produced a band called The Silks, and on the b-side to their 7 inch had played guitar and sang on an obscure Rolling Stones song called “One More Try”. Yep, I had to pull that out of the archives.

Overall, this is one of the most interesting cover shows I’ve ever put together. You have the return of Strawberry Alarm Clock. You have Public Image Ltd’s Jah Wobble covering the Beatles. There are more tracks from the upcoming Jem Records Celebrates Bob Dylan album. There’s The Routes covering the Velvet Underground. There are tracks from the third volume of Drunk Dial’s Fake series. The list goes on and on.

There’s also an eye witness account of the live show included on Camper Van Beethoven’s reissue of II & III, as I was there!!!

The Ledge #638: The Hudson Basement Excavaton Project

If you follow me on the various social media platforms (paulisded) you’ve probably seen a variety of pictures with the tagline “The Hudson Basement Excavaton Project”. A little explanation is needed. Decades ago, my son needed a rack to store his records as he had followed in the old man’s footsteps and put together his own sizable library. As I did not at that point even own a turntable, my records were all boxed up and stored in the basement.

A few years later, home renovatons meant that these boxes were joined by more boxes of CD’s, books, magazines, and other junk that needed to be moved out of the way of new carpet and paint. The original boxes of records were now buried. When I returned to vinyl a decade ago, I had a feeling that somewhere there just had to be a bunch of albums. I mean, come on. I would never sell or give away Replacements records, right?

This feeling carried on whenever I saw a good stash of used records at local stores, or when a classic album was reissued. There just has to be records somehwere/anywhere! I would take tentative searches while doing laundry from time to time, but just a few weeks ago I hit the jackpot. I found some good ol’ Taco Bell shredded lettuce boxes. You may laugh at that, but those were the perfect boxes to store records. And sure enough, as I moved other boxes around, and squeezed in between other barriers (old lawn furniture, etc.) it was indeed what I’ve been looking for. One great box of vinyl, with another couple right next to it. A few weeks later there was another discovery!

So tonight’s show is all about some of the gems discovered during this process. Some are quite rare. Others could be pretty easily found in most good used stores. But it’ sover two hours of fantastic old faves from the 70s, 80s, and even a couple from the 90s!

The Ledge #585: Hudson Compound Playlist

This week’s show is another of those broadcasts where I simply air some of the records I’ve been playing around the house the last few weeks. There’s no real format outside of that, but you do get to enjoy almost 60 years of fabulous rock and roll. What more can I say about it?

As for the “52 weeks of Teenage Kicks” series, I actually have yet another new vesrion. This is a brand new cover by a band called The Flying Waves, and it’s on an album called Rainbow that came out a week ago. Unfortunately, that’s all I know about this cover as google was no help at all. If anybody out there is familar with this artist, please contact me!

And like I do every week, I must again plead with y’all for more versions of “Teenage Kicks”. If you are a musician, or have any contact with artists that could record their own take on the classic, please contact me!

The Ledge #452: 1985

After last week’s wildly fun look back at 1990, it only made sense to do another similar-themed show. This time we go back to 1985, one of the most important years of my life. It’s the year I graduated from college. It’s the year that music pretty much became a full time way of life for me.

It was also a year of some of my favorite records of all time, as shown by the three spotlight artists of the evening. The first is pretty obvious. The major label debut of The Replacements, “Tim”, came out in September of that year, and everybody knows my feelings over that record. Another artist saw their debut album rescued from the KAUR garbage bin. Camper Van Beethoven’s “Telephone Free Landslide Victory”, rescued from the dumpster by the late Don Holmstrom, became the late night party record for me and my drinking buddies. And Husker Du had not one but two classic records that year (“Flip Your Wig” and “New Day Rising”).

But obviously that’s not all. New sounds were coming out of the UK thanks to the likes of The Jesus and Marychain. Jangle pop was alive and well in the U.S. with R.E.M. and a plethora of other artists. Even Sioux Falls had developed a bit of a scene with great records by No Direction and Ill Bill & The Spinal Chills. It’s a great two hours of memories!

After listening, please go purchase those tracks you enjoy! These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs.
