  • The Ledge #733: New Releases Pt. 2

    It’s my birthday show!!! Yes, September 11 is a terrible day to celebrate a birthday, but one can’t help when they were born. But what better way to kick off a birthday show with a brand new cover of “Teenage Kicks”. Oh, yes, I was so excited when Malibu Lou sent me the file straight off the Rum Bar presses. I’ll never tire of this song, especially when artists such as Christina Jean & Her All Stars create such a wonderfully uplifting version!

    Of course, that’s not the only Rum Bar Records treat, as I also air brand new songs from the legendary Cindy Lawson, The Laissez Fairs, and The Vibeke Saugestad Band. And, yes, I consider Geoff Palmer and Kurt Baker part of the Rum Bar family, even if their new tracks aren’t technically on the label

    Plus, “Teenage Kicks” is not the only cover on tonight’s show. There’s not one, but two Paul Westerberg remakes. One if from Mickey Dolenz of The Monkees, and then there’s a track by Weird Nightmare from a new Sub Pop compilation called Maximum MN. (Sweeping Promises’ cover of Husker Du is also from that comp.) There’s also new reworking from Die Toten Hosen and Slaughter & The Dogs, along with four classic punk tunes from a charity comp called I Said Hit It.

    That’s not all. There’s a plethora of veteran returns – The Thermals, Swansea Sound, Cocktail Slippers and The Ettes. There’s a trio of tunes from our friends at Dam-Nations. Plus, quite a few brand new bands!

  • The Ledge #720: New Releases Pt. 2

    The second part of the monthly new release series is generally dominated by the latest records Malibu Lou has put out on his legendary Rum Bar Records label. This month is no different, and it’s a perfect kick off to over two hours of great new tunes. The Hollywood Stars, The Amplifier Heads, Stop Calling Me Frank, Gene Champagne and Girl With a Hawk are this month’s Rum Bar representatives, and they’re all fabulous. There’s also a sampler of tunes from the lastest Dam-Nations compilation series.

    The rest of the show is a battle of sorts between veterans and noobs. On the veterans side, there’s great new music from the likes of Guided By Voices, Social Distortion, Dwarves, Die Toten Hosen (their final album!), Nashville Pussy, and the Real McKenziess.

    On the “noob” side, there are acts sucks as Irked, Taxi Girls, Cable TV, Hoaxxers, and so many more that once again proves there will always be great new rock and roll bands!

  • The Ledge #713: More From The Hudson Compound

    If you happen to follow me on social media (and why wouldn’t you?), you’ll have seen that every Saturday night I publish a “quilt” of records that I’ve listened to over the past week. Tonight’s show is an extension of that, minus the great number of new releases I routinely listen to during most of my listening time.

    Instead, this show features the older records that have hit the turntable (or my Plexamp account). There are classic albums by the usual suspects from the last 60 years. There are some relatively obscure groups I decided to hear. There’s also quite a few recent reissues that I’ve added to my collection.

  • The Ledge #575: Second Quarter Report

    With tonight’s show being the last broadcast of June, and especially as it is also the last day of the month, it’s pretty clear that it needed to be a second quarter recap. There’s over two hours of great music that has come out in the last three months, similar to the first quarter recap show of March 31.

    The material ranges from the fantastic power pop of Paint Fumes and Jagger Holly to veteran rockers such as Ian Hunter and The Waco Brothers. There’s some rootsy rock and roll from Tommy Stinson, Deer Tick and The Baseball Project. The music comes from not only the usual US, UK, and Canadian artists but also from Australia, Austria, France, and Germany. 

    As for this week’s “52 weeks of Teenage Kicks” series, I have a very special cover by German punkers Die Toten Hosen. Way back in the early 90s they had a fantastic covers record called Learning English, Lesson One, where they invited members of the original bands to assist them with their remakes. 2017 saw the relese of Learning English, Lesson Two that continued that format. For their version of “Teenage Kicks”, they featured original Undertones guitarist Damian O’Neill! I also included the two brand new covers I had previously played over the last quarter by Jeremy Porter & The Tucos and The Waco Brothers.

    As I do every week, I must again plead with y’all for more versions of “Teenage Kicks”. If you are a musician, or have any contact with artists that could record their own take on the classic, please contact me!

  • The Ledge #498: Covers

    I’ve mentioned a few times over the years that I have a folder that I toss cover tunes into for future shows of that sort. The recent release of not one but four fabulous albums of nothing but remakes made me realize it’s time to empy that folder. Those four records are the main focus of this covers show. Spygenius, The Grip Weeds, Die Toten Hosen, and the The Queers features revved up versions of the band’s favorite tracks from the past. Three of them highlight rockers from the 60s, while Die Toten Hosen continues to show their love to the initial punk rock revolution of the late 70s

    Besides those racuous tunes, this episode also includes The Jazz Butcher (RIP Pat Fish) doing The Modern Lovers, A Bunch of Jerks performing a Bowie classic, a group called Mom resurrecting an old Prince track, and many more. (Unfortunately, an equipment error causes an abrupt end to this week’s episode.)

    I would love it if every listener bought at least one record I played on either of these shows. These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs. And if you buy these records directly from the artist or label, please let them know you heard these tunes on The Ledge! Let them know who is giving them promotion!

  • The Ledge #454: New Releases

    It’s the last new release show of 2020, and it may just be the best one of the year. There’s a ton of new music that’s come out the past few weeks, including a few great items discovered shortly before the show commenced. And how can we not be excited by the return of Minneapolis legend Curtiss A? Of course, there’s also the usual greatness from Rum Bar Records, Big Stir Records, and many other friends of the show.

    After listening, please go purchase those tracks you enjoy! These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs.
