  • The Ledge #732: New Releases Pt. 1

    We are now in the greatest month of the year (September), and once again we have two straight weeks of nothing but new music. This week is the “friends of the show” episode, and well over half the show consists of music submitted by the artists themselves (or their representatives). There’s the monthly new track by Numb Surprise, another split single from Rob Moss and Skin-Tight Skin, the triumphant return of Lorne Behrman, football-related punk from Vista Blue, and two tunes by my new favorite Minneapolis band, Cheap Glue.  Plus so many more.

    Beyond the submitted tracks are new releases by veterans such as Ray Wylie Hubbard, Dinosaur Jr, Swami John Reis, and Kiwi Jr. There’s also a great new band from England, Westside Cowboy, and a cool track from a French band called Dynamite Shakers that’s produced by Lionel from The Liminanas!

  • The Ledge #729: New Releases Pt. 2

    I may call the artists in my first part of the monthly new release series “friends of the show” but this month’s second part heavily features two of my longest serving buddies of my years broadcasting The Ledge. 

    First off, I have the privilege of debuting around half of the brand new album by Jeremy Porter and The Tucos, Sell Their Souls. Set to come out next week (August 21), this may be Porter’s masterpiece, and he was gracious enough to record commentary tracks for the tracks I picked to play. I must thank Porter for his longtime support of the show, and for going the extra mile in 

    And then there’s our pal Malibu Lou. For close to a decade, he has sent me care package after care package, both digital and physical. His label, Rum Bar Records, is certainly a Ledge favorite, and his latest free download, Summer School Sampler: Second Semester, is a must for everybody. 33 new or new-ish tracks, and it costs nothing! Besides a set of highlights from this comp, there’s another set with new material from The Lemon Drop Gang, The Amplifier Heads, and The Hollywood Stars.

    Besides those great sets, there’s plenty of other fantastic punk, garage, power pop, and good ol’ rock and roll. What’s your favorite tune this week?

  • The Ledge #613: First Quarter Recap

    During the process of putting together tonight’s look back at the first three months of 2024 I suddenly realized that just by looking through the January and February releases I already had more than enough tunes for a two hour show. That’s without even taking a look at a jampacked March! 

    Obviously, that means I had to cut out quite a few fave songs for tonight’s show. My suggestion is for everyone to go back and listen to the new release episodes of the last three months to check out anything missed in tonight’s broadcast.

    It has been a great year for music, although I confess that I say this each and every year. But the fact is that those who complain that rock and roll was only great in their teen years are just plain wrong. That’s a “you” problem. There’s something for everyone tonight – ferocious punk, hookladen power pop, a blast or two back to roots rock. There’s brand new bands and grizzled veterans. Take a chance and give them a shot!

  • The Ledge #610: New Releases Pt. 2

    This week’s continuation of last week’s new release episode features, once again, no drop off in quality. There’s plenty of great new music from both relatively new artists and longtime veterans. I mean, who could have guessed that we’d still have vital tunes from two of America’s first punk bands, T.S.O.L. and Nervous Eaters? Let alone the return of The Bevis Frond, the latest from super-prolific songwriter Daniel Romano, and a plethora of Australian bands?

    Oh, and by the way, I’m looking for some suggestions for next week’s show. Earlier this week, I pulled out my collecton of ten-inch vinyl EP’s, and I’d like to do a broadcast based on those generally forgotten records. But I don’t have enough of these types of releases to fill a whole show, so please let me know some of your favorites of this format!

  • The Ledge #607: Love Stinks

    Anti-love songs is a rock and roll specialty. From the very beginning of the genre, writers with a poison pen have created a plethora of material that is not exactly Hallmark card material. Tonight’s show celebrates tracks of this time, highlighted by a number of more recent tracks of that sort. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for oldies, as there are garage rockers from the 60s, power pop from the 70s, and some good ol’ alternative rockers from the 80s. And, of course, it’s also an opportunity for an extended set from the greatest self-loathing rockers, The Replacements. I mean, come on, you can’t have a show of this sort without “Valentine”.

  • The Ledge #546: Runners Up

    The process of compiling my annual list of the year’s best albums rarely varies. It usually begins in mid-November with a combination of notetaking and mental obsessing. Then over Thanksgiving weekend I begin putting ideas into various categories that I couldn’t even try to explain. Finally, the first couple of weeks of December sees this list finally coming together.

    As you may expect, that initial list is much longer than the official post of the best of the year. There can be anywhere between 60 and 100 records vying for inclusion. This week’s show comprises the 31 records that were in consideration before that final cut.

    But that’s not to say that these records are not as good as my “chart toppers”. No, these days there’s a fine line between a what makes the top ten and what makes the lower rungs. All of these records are fabulous albums that deserve to be heard by everybody. This is why the first time ever I’ve put together this “runners up” episode. 

    I would love it if every listener bought at least one record I played on either of these shows. These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs.   • The Ledge #542: New Releases

    As always, first Friday means nothing but new releases, and tonight it’s an extended show featuring almost 2 1/2 hours of fabulous new rock and roll. And like always, it’s a wide mix of styles. There are bands that were formed just a few months ago mixed with the returns of legends from the past. There are both supergroups and bands that would probably not be recognized in their home towns. There are also quite a few “friends of the show”, including some tracks from Dan Israel’s awesome new LP, Seriously. 

    I would love it if every listener bought at least one record I played on either of these shows.   • The Ledge #530: New Releases (Pt. 1)

    Once again, the wealth of new material being released each and every month “forces” me to expand my new release episode into a two part series. Tonight’s episode focuses primarily on “friends” of the show. Bands that have so nicely regularly sent their new projects to The Ledge. Great labels such as Rum Bar Records, Dirtnap Records, and Stardumb Records. Fabulous Minneapolis artists such as The Right Here, Night Jobs, and UltraBomb. The latest covers project by Geoff Palmer. Plus some of the other great new tunes by longtime faves Ty Segall, Osees, and The Sadies, mixed with some new band discoveries (Gentleman Rogues, The Sparklers).

    One note, however. At the very end of the show I introduce a track by Dust Star. Unfortunately, my broadcast machine decided to air The Rubs. Still, a quality selection but I’ll have to save Dust Star for next week.
