  • The Ledge #636: Third Quarter Report

Posted on September 28, 2024 1:29 am by theledge Comment

The end of September also means it’s the end of the third quarter of the year, so tonight’s show celebrates the great music that has come out these last three months. There’s a little something for everyone tonight, from the melodic goth tones of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds to savage garage punk from The Putz and Stiff Richards. There are veteran bands that have been around for 45-50 years (The Dictators, Nervous Eaters), along with a ton of new blood. There’s friends of the show (Rob Moss and Skin-Tight Skin, Tamar Berk) next to a plethora of artists I wish were my friends.

I also begin the festivities with a very personal story, and I would like to thank those that have reached out to offer me encouragement. It’s very appreciated and brings a smile to this old curmudgeon.

  • The Ledge #629: New Releases Pt. 1

Posted on August 3, 2024 1:13 am by theledge Comment

We may be heading to the end of summer but it’s not the end of great music. Once again, the new release episode for this month has been expanded into a two part extravaganza. Tonight’s first part features a number of “friends of the show”, including monthly singles by White Rose Motor Oil and Rob Moss & Skin-Tight Skin. There Realpunkradio’s Greg Lonesome with his Intrusive Thoughts project, a teaser from Tamar Berk’s upcoming record, a couple of new tracks from Big Stir Records, and plenty of others that so graciously keep me on their mailing list!

Of course, that’s not all. We have the return of X with reportedly their final album. There’s the first new Kaisers album in 246 months! Jack White is also represented with his surprise new release that I’m not afraid to say is his best music since the demise of The White Stripes. Plus so much more!

Along with these releases are the usual mix of punk, garage, power pop, and much more! Also, please head to YouTube and subscribe to our channel – Public Domain Classics 888. We have close to 500 classic films from over 110 years of releases!

  • The Ledge #471: 1981 US Punk Faves

Posted on April 17, 2021 1:19 am by theledge Comment

1981 was a very special year for your favorite podcast host. I graduated from high school, and immediately started at the local radio station when I entered college. While the 2 – 6 am shift may seem like a nightmare to most people, it was the perfect opportunity for me to investigate the floor to ceiling record racks in the cramped studio.

This week’s show represents the US-originated records from that era that mean the most to me today. Most of them I discovered during these late night shifts, but a few of them I must admit they weren’t faves until years later. Of course, I have to highlight the first releases from my two favorite Minneapolis bands of all time, and longtime faves the Ramones put out their sixth album that year. There’s also a couple of new indie labels, IRS and SST, that would greatly influence me throughout the rest of the decade.

After listening, please go purchase those tracks you enjoy! These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs. And if you buy these records directly from the artist or label, please let them know you heard these tunes on The Ledge! Let them know who is giving them promotion!

  • The Ledge #455: Best Albums of 2020

Posted on December 12, 2020 3:19 am by theledge Comment

So let’s get this out of the way. 2020 was a dumpster fire of a year. A worldwide pandemic shut everything down. A contentious Presidential election tore apart friends and families. Race and sexual identity issues became online litmus tests. Everybody was angry.

Putting together this year’s list then became a tougher task than usual. The initial list for this task included almost 100 records, and the pairing down included cutting out quite a few artists that routinely end up in the upper portion in a typical year. Elvis Costello’s new album didn’t make the cut. Nor did the 2020 records by Bruce Springsteen, Steve Earle, or Chuck Prophet. Even the surprisingly great reunion records by Wire, Close Lobsters, and the Psychedelic Furs were reluctantly dismissed.

This week’s episode of The Ledge is a reverse order, Casey Kasem-ish countdown show featuring a track from each of these albums. After listening, please go purchase those albums or tracks you enjoy! These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs.

  • The Ledge #437: 1980 American Punk

Posted on July 25, 2020 1:29 am by theledge Comment

Earlier this year I featured a show that focused on British punk rock from 1980. Tonight, I do the same thing but featuring nothing but tunes from American punk bands from that same year.

It’s kind of interesting how the focus of the punk scene (at least as far as releases went) moved from New York to the West Coast. It was quite a year for California bands, with many veteran acts still pumping out new music, but also a ton of brand new bands with their first single or album. X, The Plimsouls, Circle Jerks, Dead Kennedys, Red Cross, Minutemen, and so many more made their debuts that year. (And yes, there is one error as a non-1980 track was discovered to have aired.)

After listening, please go purchase those tracks you enjoy! These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs.

  • The Ledge #425: Rock ‘n’ Roll Women

Posted on April 25, 2020 1:20 am by theledge Comment

When I was putting together this month’s new release episodes I decided that it was time to also do another all-female episode of The Ledge. Both of those episodes had multiple sets of nothing but rocking women, as did previous months this year.

The surprise release of X’s first album in over 35 years, along with today’s new albums by Lucinda Williams and Alice Bag, were the icing on that great cake. Plus tonight’s show features the world premiere of Hayley and the Crushers’ upcoming Jacaranda EP, which comes out on June 2. It’s a fantastic show featuring all sorts of different styles of rock and roll from all over the world.

After listening, please go purchase those tracks you enjoy! These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs.
