  • The Ledge #652: Covers

Posted on January 25, 2025 2:16 am by theledge Comment

I’ve always said that I have a folder on my laptop where I toss any great cover version that I encounter, and when that folder is “full” it’s time for an all-covers show.

Well, I noticed earlier this week that said folder was close to that level, but I also was made aware that Monday, January 20, was the 50th anniversary of Bob Dylan’s Blood On the Tracks album. Surely, I had a few remakes of tunes from that classic record.

Add a handful of Dylan tunes and I was ready. Yet I received another little surprise just a few hours before this week’s broadcast. Our friends at Big Stir Records sent their upcoming Sorrows album. Parting Is Such Sweet Sorrow is an unreleased record that the original lineup recorded back in 1981. With the reunited group now signed to the label, it certainly makes sense that Big Stir would let us finally hear this power pop classic!

  • The Ledge #640: New Releases (Pt. 1)

Posted on November 2, 2024 1:20 am by theledge Comment

Once again, the monthly new release episode is expanded to a two part extravaganza! This week’s show is split between “friends of the show” and long time veterans of the business. The “friends” sections include hometown heroes (Off Contact), a fellow Real Punk Radio personality (Intrusive Thoughts vocalist Greg “Rock ‘n’ Roll Manifesto” Lonesome), a couple of Big Stir Records new tunes, and quite a few email submissions.

As for the “veterans”, it’s amazing how much material some of these artists have put out over the years. The new one by Australian singer/songwriter Paul Kelly is his 29th abum. The Fleshtones have probably put out an equal amount of material. Only Ones leader Peter Perrett is back with a new album, and the Pixies, The Effigies, Nick Piunti, and others have a lengthy discography. Plus, we have the monthly new freebies by Friends of Cesar Romero and Vista Blue!

  • The Ledge #639: Annual Halloween Spooktacular!

Posted on October 26, 2024 1:15 am by theledge 1 Comment

The annual Halloween show is yet another Ledge tradition. Every year I gather up whatever new scary tunes have been released, and fill up whatever time is left with tracks I call “new to me”. Thanks to a plethora of subissions this year, I didn’t have to do a lot of searching. It’s great that so many artists, labels, and/or PR companies think that this show is a worthwhile outlet to get the word out about new releases!

  • The Ledge #557: 1998

Posted on February 25, 2023 2:28 am by theledge Comment

It’s always shocking when you stumble upon tweets or articles noting the anniversary of beloved albums. You can’t help but wonder how something that seems like it came out yesterday is actually…well, old!

That’s the case with tonight’s show. Every single song you hear is 25 years old. It’s just insane to me that some of my favorite Americana (Son Volt, Golden Smog, Drive-By Truckers), power pop (Sloan, Tommy Keene, Nada Surf), singer/songwriter (Elliott Smith, Silver Jews), and punk (Fugazi, Screeching Weasel, Bad Religion) records have hit this milestone. It just doesn’t feel like nostalgia

As for the “52 Weeks of Teenage Kicks” entry, I’ve got a fabulous rarity. 1998 saw the release of Scandal Controvery and Romance, the classic debut record by The Prissteens. To celebrate the 45th birthday of their A&R rep, Howard Thompson, the pressed up 45 copies of a tribute song called “Oh Howard!”. The b-side of this single was their Undertones cover that featured a few lyrical changes and retitled “Teenage Dicks”. (Both of these tracks were eventually reissued on 2020’s The Hound collection of rarities and demos.)

Once again, I’m always actively looking for new covers of “Teenage Kicks”. Please don’t hesitate to create your own personal spin on one of the greatest songs of all time. Contact me at paulisded@gmail.com if you have a version to submit or if you have any questions regarding this project.

  • The Ledge #463: Songs About The Ramones

Posted on February 20, 2021 2:25 am by theledge Comment

As I state at the beginning of the show, the initial idea for this theme came from the plethora of recent songs that mention The Ramones in the title, both individually and as a group. Add to that a few faves from the past, along with some great suggestions from social media, and I had a fantastic playlist to air tonight. And since the band was also known to write songs about their lives, there’s even a set of Ramones covers of songs of that sort.

After listening, please go purchase those tracks you enjoy! These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs.

  • The Ledge #450: New Releases

Posted on November 7, 2020 2:59 am by theledge Comment

In all the years of doing this monthly new release show, this may be the most varied I’ve ever done. After initial sets of folk-ish, acoustic rock, this month’s supersized show gradually built up the intensity until a final set of veteran hardcore bands. In between was almost all genres of rock and roll, including indie, garage, post-punk, and so much more. It’s a great guide to new tunes!

After listening, please go purchase those tracks you enjoy! These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs.
