  • The Ledge #690: New Releases (Pt. 1)

    I was going through the motions of selecting songs for the planned two new release episodes for November, and I quickly realized that I had way too many songs! What a problem to have, right? So for the first time, this month’s new release series will be three full episodes! Yes, I know earlier this year I had some leftovers for a third episode, but I’m talking about three full shows of new tunes! 

    Tonight’s episode, like most “part 1’s”, is primarily devoted to friends of the show. These are artists and labels that routinely send me their newest tunes. Like Numb Surprise, who have sent me tracks each and every month this year. Or the latest Rob Moss and Skin-Tight Skin double cover series, where he and a fellow artist cover each other. There’s also the latest from power pop legend Jim Basnight, a new Big Stir release, and even some baseball-related tracks from our buddies Vista Blue.

    Plus there’s quite a few new power pop faves, and a nice batch of garage, punk, and indie rock. Oh yeah, and a deep dive into that new Husker Du live box set. What tracks did you did?

  • The Ledge #684: Covers

    Ok, the “covers” folder is full so it’s again time for a show of nothing but remakes! What’s surprising is that it usually takes five or six months to be ready for each of this type, but it was only two months ago that I utilized this theme. But then again, there’s been a plethora of tribute albums in the last few weeks, mot notably the fabulous Make Something Happen: A Tribute To The Flashcubes on Big Stir Records. I aired a set off this release in my new release episode earlier this month, but it definitely deserved another outting in this episode.

    But that’s not all from our pals at Big Stir Records. On October 10th, they will have the perfect Halloween album with Chilling, Thrilling Hooks and Haunted Harmonies: The Big Stir Records Halloween Grimoire. Featuring almost all of the label’s great acts, they’ve released a prerelease single off the record, a cover of “Eyeball Eater (From Outer Space) by sparkle*jets u.k. What’s especailly cool is that the digital version of the single includes a previously unreleased 1958 version by The Legends, a band featuring Richard West, fathre of sparkle*jets u.k.’s Susan West. 

    Elsewhere, there are fab covers by Rum Bar Records acts, along with remakes of tunes by Lemonheads, Wire, Saints, Reigning Sound, Roky Erickson, and so much more. And there’s the latest double cover set series by Rob Moss and Skin-Tight Skin, where Moss and a collaborative artist cover each other’s tunes. This time the act doing the Moss tune is singer/songwriter Eytan Mirsky!

  • The Ledge #682: New Releases Pt. 1

    Another month, another two episodes devoted to new music! This week’s part one is centered around two great tribute albums released by two great labels. Our friends at Big Stir Records are set to release a fabulous tribute to power pop hall of famers The Flashcubes on September 12. I’m featuring five tracks off this great release that I’m sure y’all will love.

    There’s also a fabulous new tribute record from Jem Records, and it’s all about David Bowie. Following in the footsteps of similar records devoted to Ray Davies, Brian Wilson, John Lennon and Jagger/Richards, tonight you get four of the abum’s 11 tracks that cover Bowie’s entire career.

    Along with those great tracks, there’s new singles by Ledge favorits The Sleeveens and Memo PST, a wonderful compilation EP of previously-released tracks by The Whiffs, and awesome albums by Tamar Berk, Star Collector, The Unknowns, and many more.

  • The Ledge #662: New Releases Pt. 1

    It’s time for another rundown of brand new tunes, and once again this month it’s a two part series. This week features, as always, a number of “friends” of the show – Tom Whillock, Rob Moss and Skin-Tight Skin, The Amplifier Heads, Numb Surprise, and The Bablers. There’s a set devoted to veteran acts that all released records today – The Waterboys, Craig Finn, Mekons, and Will Johnson. There’s the long-awaited full-length album (after literally dozens of EP’s) by our pals Vista Blue. Superchunk is back with a new single, and Swami John Reis has another smoking new album. And there’s also the usual mix of new and longtime favorite artists with quality tracks.

  • The Ledge #636: Third Quarter Report

    The end of September also means it’s the end of the third quarter of the year, so tonight’s show celebrates the great music that has come out these last three months. There’s a little something for everyone tonight, from the melodic goth tones of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds to savage garage punk from The Putz and Stiff Richards. There are veteran bands that have been around for 45-50 years (The Dictators, Nervous Eaters), along with a ton of new blood. There’s friends of the show (Rob Moss and Skin-Tight Skin, Tamar Berk) next to a plethora of artists I wish were my friends.

    I also begin the festivities with a very personal story, and I would like to thank those that have reached out to offer me encouragement. It’s very appreciated and brings a smile to this old curmudgeon.

  • The Ledge #634: New Releases Pt. 1

    As we have all year long, this month’s new release eisode is once again a two part series. This week’s first part features a ton of “friends of the show”. There’s the monthly tracks by White Rose Motor Oil, Rob Moss and Skin-Tight Skin, and Numb Surprise. There’s new material byperennial Ledge favorites Dave Strong, The Beatersband, and The Trouble Seekers.

    And there’s a ton of power pop this week, including a trio of new releases from Big Stir Records. There’s also a sample of tracks from the 25th volume of the International Pop Overthrow series. 

    Amy Rigby’s wonderful new record, Hang In There With Me, is also featured, as is Lydia Loveless’ piano reworking of her classic Somewhere Else album, titled Something Else.

  • The Ledge #626: Laurie Lindeen Tribute & New Releases (Pt. 1)

    Earlier this week, fans of Minneapolis rock and roll were stunned by the news that former Zuzu’s Petals leader Laurie Lindeen had passed away on July 1 due to a brain aneurysm. Besdies that wonderful 90s band, Lindeen later published her memoirs, Petal Pusher: A Rock and Roll Cinderella Story, in 2008. Of course, we had to memoralize her passing with a few tracks from her band.

    Since it’s also the first Friday of the month, it’s also new release night, so the second half focuses primarily on “friends of the show”. There’s the monthly new tracks by White Rose Motor Oil, Rob Moss and Skin-Tight Skin, and Moss’ other project, ROBOTOM, Ltd. There’s a trio of brand new tunes from our friends at Rum Bar Records, and towards the end of the show there are two cuts from records that are bound to do very well on my end of the year charts!

  • The Ledge #622: New Releases, Pt. 1

    I don’t think anybody is surprised that once again the monthly new release episode is a two parter. That’s the way this excellent year in music has gone, and will hopefully carry on all the way through December.

    This week’s episode kicks off with a “friends of the show” series of tracks. There’s the latest in White Rose Motor Oil’s “pre-owned songs” series, along with the monthly releases of new tracks by Rob Moss and Skin-Tight Skin and Rob’s side project Robotom, LTD. 

    But there’s also the exciting news that fellow RealPunkRadio DJ Greg Lonesome, host of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Manifesto, has a new project called Intrusice Thoughts. As legendary blogger Lord Rutledge wrote on his Faster and Louder blog, “the band’s debut single ‘Daytime Drama’ is a ferocious shot of rockin’ old school punk with a very important message. Greg wrote the lyrics as a reflection of how he felt starting therapy…of course ‘Daytime Drama’ is a dark song, but it ends with a glimmer of hope.” 

    Along with these great tunes from our pals, there’s a set devoted to the fantastic Jem Records Celebrates Jagger & Richards, along with new music by Buffalo Tom, Memo PST, Ultrabomb, Micah Schnabel, and two full sets of ferocious female-fronted rock and roll!

  • The Ledge #618: New Releases (Pt. 1)

    As we have done all throughout 2024, this month’s new release show is once again a two-part extravaganza. This thrills me, as that obviously means it’s a super great year so far, and I hope this is the case each and every month.

    This episode’s personal highlight is the first half hour or so of the broadcast, as it features “friends of the show” – artists that routinely send me their latest tunes. I cannot be happier than to share their music with all of you, and if you enjoy them as much as I do please head to their bandcamp pages and purchase them!

    There’s also some wonderful new power pop from The Reflectors, Kate Clover, and The Lemon Twigs (among others). There are veteran acts such as The Members, Woodentops, and surviving members of The Fall. There’s new “power folk” from Frank Turner. And, of course, a ton of great high energy rock and roll.

  • The Ledge #614: New Releases (Pt.1)

    I was close to finishing off the tracklists for this month’s two part new release series when I received an unexpected text message from an old friend. Rich Show, the legendary leader of three classic South Dakota bands (No Direction, Flag With Hank, and Violet), along with a number of side projects and solo releases, sent me the files for his upcoming record, Age Appropriate.

    I could not have been happier with this shocking news, as he’s been a great friend for the over 40 years he’s been creating music. Obviously, I immediately sampled tracks from the record and inserted them into tonight’s show.

    But Rich is not the ony friend whose music is featured tonight. White Rose Motor Oil sent me the second cover of their “pre-owned songs” series. Rob Moss and Skin-Tight Skin have contnued their series of monthly singles. Numb Surprise, who contributed to last year’s “52 Weeks of Teenage Kicks”, provided two newly-recorded tracks. There’s also fantastic tracks from our friends at Big Stir Records (The Half Cubes, The Speed Of Sound), Rum Bar Records (Beebe Gallini, Pavid Vermin, The Shang Hi Los), and many others!

    My hope for these new release shows, and honestly all of my broadcasts, is that you guys enjoy these tunes so much that you go out and purchase them. If you do, please let these artists and labels know where they heard them as it really helps shows like The Ledge continue to receive these great tracks!
