  • The Ledge #522: Covers

Posted on May 28, 2022 1:27 am by theledge Comment

As I’ve stated before, I have a special folder where I toss in various great cover tunes as I come across them. It was pretty much perfect timing that my folder became “show-length” just in time for this holiday weekend. What better way to begin the summer with revved-up remakes of some of our favorite tunes?

Plus, I’ll take any opportunity to give more airplay to my pal Dave Scarbrough, especially when the one remake on his brand new album, Happy Ever After, is a Paul Westerberg tune! You all should check this album out!

Also included in this broadcast are tracks from Steve Earle’s new tribute to his friend and mentor, Jerry Jeff Walker, Eric Ambel and Greg Hoy’s remakes of Neil Young tunes, The William Loveday Intention’s teardown of Bob Dylan tunes, and a few of our friends (The Short Fuses, New Rocket Union) from Minneapolis! Oh, and we have the exclusive covers by the Hoodoo Gurus that are only found on the vinyl version of their new Chariot of the Gods album.

Speaking of Minneapolis, Cindy Lawson’s fabulous new record on Rum Bar Records, New Tricks, includes a tune written by the recently-deceased Lori Wray. I’m not real familiar with Wray, but she made her recording debut as a member of The Von Bulows (aka the Pedaljets), and has worked with 27 Various, Todd Newman (The Leatherwoods), and many other Minneapolis greats. I know I’m going to look into more of Wray’s work.

I would love it if every listener bought at least one record I played on either of these shows. These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs. And if you buy these records directly from the artist or label, please let them know you heard these tunes on The Ledge! Let them know who is giving them promotion!

  • The Ledge #468: First Quarter Report

Posted on March 27, 2021 1:17 am by theledge Comment

Since we are just a few days away from April, it makes sense that the last episode of the month is a look back at the first quarter of 2021. What albums, EP’s and singles have caught my attention? Has it been a great year?

The answer is the same as always. Despite what the naysayers have to tell you, there’s always great music being released and tonight’s show is living proof. This two hour episode flows from genre to genre, and from the famous to the friendly little local bands that have submitted their tracks to me. If you like independent music, you’re going to love this show!

After listening, please go purchase those tracks you enjoy! These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs. And if you buy these records directly from the artist or label, please let them know you heard these tunes on The Ledge! Let them know who is giving them promotion!

As I stated on tonight’s all-covers episode, I have a folder on my hard drive where I toss in any cool remakes that I accumulate. When that folder is filled then it’s time to do another show of that type.

Well, the folder is full, and was actually overflowing after Wednesday’s announcement from Stardumb Records that February 26 will see the release of the K7s tribute to the Ramones’ “Mondo Bizarro” album. Yes, Kurt Baker, Luis Sanchez and others have recorded a song by song remake of the entire album.

Another strong collection of covers comes from Drunk Dial Records. “Fake” is a compilation of songs by…well, fake bands from movies and TV. There’s a whole set of quick bursts of greatness from bands such as Pavid Vermin and the Thorazines with Hayley Crusher from that tribute.

These are just a few of the highilghts of tonight’s show. If you love power pop, punk, Bob Dylan, Americana, and other mini-genres, tonight’s show is for you.

After listening, please go purchase those tracks you enjoy! These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs.

  • The Ledge #457: New Releases

Posted on January 9, 2021 2:58 am by theledge Comment

It’s the first show of the new year, which means it’s the first new release episode of the year! Generally, there isn’t much for new material this time of year, but this year seems to be an exception. You’ll find plenty of great tunes in this super-sized episode, which ranges from punk to indie to garage to power pop to rockabilly to whatever other rock and roll genre you enjoy.

After listening, please go purchase those tracks you enjoy! These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs.

  • The Ledge #435: Scott’s Favorite Records, Vol. 5 – Americana

Posted on July 11, 2020 1:27 am by theledge Comment

Americana, country-punk, No Depression, alt-country. Whatever you want to call this twangy-ish sort of music it’s been a part of my life since the early 80’s. Nope, not after the scene exploded with Uncle Tupelo. The country influence has always been a part of college rock, which is the first half of this week’s look at my favorite songs of all time.

The second half does kick off with Uncle Tupelo and the wonderful spinoffs Wilco and Son Volt, along with quite a few fantastic singer/songwriters and revved up Gram Parsons acolytes. Actually, acolyltes of both Parsons AND The Replacements!

After listening, please go purchase those tracks you enjoy! These great artists deserve to be compensated for their hard work, and every purchase surely helps not only pay their bills but fund their next set of wonderful songs.
